fresh air.

i had no plans for us today; those are the best kind of days. having small children really puts a damper on my sense of spontaneity. we did our best and threw the boys in the car to go hiking. gus has a rockin' pair of LL Bean hikers and they don't get nearly enough use. H rode in the mei tai and we had a blast. that trail is very steep for a two year old (or a very pregnant me back in 2006--if i only knew i'd have preterm issues i wouldn't have done that!) august did great, with no carrying! he is a natural hiker. we found a buckeye and he learned to say that word. we found a stick shaped like the letter Y. we looked at big trees high in the sky.

after about an hour in the woods, hudson fell asleep. there is nothing sweeter than listening to the sounds of the forest with a two year old and a baby asleep on my chest. after the walk we visited the nature store and august hooted at the owls. he selected a toy snake as a treat and we went home for naps.
eta: i didn't realize how much my husband looks like a giant bald leprechaun.
